According to the 2012 United States Census Bureau Houghton County had a population of 36,520. The median income for a household in Houghton County was $34,625, and the median income for a family was $48,506.

The Houghton County Health Statics table reports that in 2011 the average days of care for a patient was 15,006 days. This number was made up of 3,827 patients diagnosed with one of the leading 20 diagnosis in Houghton County in 2011. i.e. heart disease, pneumonia, poisoning, cancer, kidney disease, etc. http://www.mdch.state.mi/

Rare or serious diseases or injuries can easily result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. These bills can quickly wipe out savings and retirement accounts, college education funds and home equity. With the average hospital stay of $3000 a day , research will show that medical hardship is the #1 reason for bankruptcy in the United States of which 78% of the filers had medical insurance.

DDIY is a non profit organization that was established in 2013. DDIY has a mission to help people in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties with financial hardship caused by medical hardship. The plan to accomplish this mission is to collaborate with other organizations in Houghton and Keweenaw County and to fund raise inside and outside the communities.

The plan to achieve this mission has been set by the board of DDIY consisting of 8 members of the community. The board has a clear vision of what DDIY will become. It will become an emergency funding source for the people of Houghton and Keweenaw County who are facing any kind of financial hardship due to medical hardship. Funds will be raised through solicitation and online donations. Volunteer efforts, community support, and donations through various planned efforts will be the long term plan for funding DDIY. We believe that DDIY will be duplicated in other counties as we grow and help people in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.

The board is made up of volunteer efforts. No one is paid.

DDIY will be measured on its success by the community and the families it helps. The board believes that the community will embrace what DDIY’s mission is and through monetary and volunteer efforts DDIY will be able to help numerous families in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.

The impact on lives that will be touched, through financial contributions to people in need, and the volunteers that help will have a priceless impact on the communities that we live in. These combined efforts will inevitably make DDIY’s mission stronger and known throughout Houghton and Keweenaw Counties and beyond.
